Coloring Books - What Are They?

Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first surfaced in the US. The main reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
