What are coloring books?


There are coloring books for both adults and children. Coloring Books History

The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. The actual cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the necessity of art and the value of teaching art to people, particularly youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. As far as small children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the original coloring book made by them in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. Next, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching youngsters a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Young children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Learning words through pictures is a superb way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a powerful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subjects like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recalling the information easier.
