The 1st coloring book was made in America. This emergence was part of a process called the democratization of art. The person who influenced this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the importance of art and the value of teaching art to people, particularly youngsters. Coloring books were the invention of the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the 1st coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Almost every classroom for small children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate little children on a number of topics.
