The meaning of Coloring Books and Their Uses


A coloring book is a book in which drawings are drawn using lines and which readers can fill up and colour by using such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other different kinds of paint and colors. While most coloring books are readily available children, there are some that are aimed at adults. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are normally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are produced so that each page can be removed from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Some coloring books may feature a story that young children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first appeared in the US. The reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two teachers who helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the importance of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Art education would prove to be beneficial in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up supporting him in his future careers. Educators assert that small children who engage in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the original coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. Next, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another fundamental figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the inspiration that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching kids about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and challenging in contrast to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new vocabulary. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a magic formula of helping people acquire a new language. As well as using images to expand people's comprehension of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Big publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
