Coloring Books - What Are They?


A coloring book is a book which includes outlines, images as well as drawings which readers can paint and color by using things like colouring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. There are coloring books for both adults and young children. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are normally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are made so that each page can be detached from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Some coloring books may incorporate a storyline that small children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that kids are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first come about in the US. A process called the democratization of art was responsible for the birth of coloring books. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. Art education would prove to be beneficial in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up supporting him in his future careers. As far as small children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


Coloring books were the creation of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Almost every classroom for small children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate kids on a number of topics. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books concerning every topic. Images are easier to recall for little children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a magic formula of helping people acquire a new language. They are also utilized in particular classes as a way of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recollecting the information easier.
