The meaning of Coloring Books as well as their Uses


A coloring book is a book in which graphics are drawn using lines and which readers can fill up and color through the use of things like colorful pencils, pens, crayons and also other numerous kinds of paint and colors. Coloring Books History

Coloring books first surfaced in the US. The primary reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The person who influenced this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Teachers from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills vital down the road, particularly those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in youngsters who partake in artistic activities.


The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. Afterwards, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books touching on every topic. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain topics like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
