Coloring Books - What Are They?


Coloring books incorporate sketches designed to be filled and colored implementing several tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. While most coloring books are meant for children, there are numerous that are geared towards adults. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are traditionally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are created so that each page can be detached from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would spoil the story. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.


The History of Coloring Books

Coloring books first originated in the US. The reason behind the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up aiding him in his future careers. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in small children who partake in artistic activities.


Coloring books were the development of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching little children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and tough when compared with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new expressions. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. As well as using images to expand people's knowledge of certain topics like geometry, which require visual assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
