Coloring Books - What Are They?
A coloring book is a book that has lines, images and also drawings which readers can paint and colour by using such things as coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are usually printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are designed so that each page can be removed from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Some coloring books may contain a story that small children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that little children are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. These coloring books are utilized by huge companies as advertising materials and ways of popularizing new cartoons or films. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. Another type of activity includes coloring books that come with stickers that can be attached on certain pages on these books.
Coloring Book- The History
The 1st coloring book was created in America. The real reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The other two teachers who aided this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was helpful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ perception of tangible things. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are certainly likely to prove very useful in his future as an adult. He might even end up finding his passion in life or a career on account of developing an early artistic skill. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in small children who participate in artistic activities.
Coloring books were the innovation of the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the first coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the push that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Almost every classroom for little children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate kids on a number of topics. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books pertaining to every topic. Young children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a great way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also an excellent way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain topics like geometry and astronomy. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by large publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with varied colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
