What are coloring books?


A coloring book is a book in which images are drawn using lines and which readers can fill up and colour by using such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and also other differing kinds of paint and colours. Coloring Books History

The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. A process called the democratization of art was responsible for the birth of coloring books. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills important in the future, specifically those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that small children who are involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined up with the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching little children about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books concerning every topic. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and difficult as opposed to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new words. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's understanding of certain topics like geometry, which require visual assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recollecting the information easier.
