The History of Coloring Books
Coloring books first originated in the US. A process called the democratization of art was responsible for the birth of coloring books. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the necessity of art and the value of teaching art to people, specially youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Art education would prove to be beneficial in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up helping him in his future careers. The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
