The Definition of Coloring Books as well as their Uses


A coloring book is a book in which images are drawn using lines and which readers can fill and color by using things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and also other numerous kinds of paint and colors. The History of Coloring Books

Coloring books first surfaced in the US. This appearance was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The other two teachers who aided this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, specially children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving abilities and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are very likely to prove extremely useful in his future as an adult. He may even end up finding his passion in life or a career on account of developing an early artistic skill. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in children who participate in artistic activities.


The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching youngsters about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books pertaining to every topic. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and challenging when compared with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new terminology. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through illustrations or photos is an excellent way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a powerful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subject areas like geometry and astronomy. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by large publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with different colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
