Coloring books first appeared in the US. This emergence was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the importance of art and the value of teaching art to people, especially children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving abilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Art education would prove to be beneficial in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up supporting him in his future careers. The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. There after, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching little children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms.
