They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined up with the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Almost every classroom for youngsters and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate small children on a number of topics.
