What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book that features outlines, sketches and also drawings which readers can paint and colour implementing things like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. There are coloring books for both adults and kids. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are traditionally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are made so that each page can be detached from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would spoil the story. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that young children are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.
Coloring Books History
The very first coloring book was made in America. The cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The person who influenced this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was beneficial to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and enhanced peoples’ perception of tangible things. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills necessary later on, in particular those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in youngsters who participate in artistic activities.
Coloring books were the invention of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another essential figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
Almost every classroom for youngsters and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate youngsters on a number of topics. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Little children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. They are also utilized in certain classes as a method of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
