What are coloring books?


A coloring book is a book where images are drawn using lines and which readers can fill and color through the use of such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other various sorts of paint and colors. While most coloring books are meant for youngsters, there are several that are made for adults. Coloring books and coloring pages are produced on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are sold separately or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are created to enable that. Some coloring books may feature a story that small children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that little children are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. These coloring books are utilized by huge companies as advertising materials and ways of popularizing new cartoons or films. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. There are also types of coloring books where small children can use stickers to stick on the pages and tell their own stories with them.


The History of Coloring Books

The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. The true reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who assisted this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, particularly children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills crucial later on, particularly relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that youngsters who take part in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


Coloring books were the innovation of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching little children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and complicated when compared with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new terminology. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a wonderful way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. As well as using images to expand people's comprehension of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
