Coloring Books - What Are They?


A coloring book is a book containing lines, sketches and drawings which readers can paint and color making use of such things as colouring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. There are coloring books for both adults and young children. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are ordinarily printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are manufactured so that each page can be removed from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Many coloring books have a unique theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. There are also types of coloring books where children can use stickers to stick on the pages and tell their own stories with them.


Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first originated in the US. This appearance was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who aided this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the importance of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills vital down the road, especially those relating to finding a suitable future job. As far as kids were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


Coloring books were the invention of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching small children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Small children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. It is a known fact that connecting words with images is a faster way of helping people acquire a new language. They are also utilized in particular classes as a technique of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recalling the information easier.
