The Definition of Coloring Books plus their Uses


A coloring book is a book in which drawings are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill up and color by using things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other numerous kinds of paint and colors. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are generally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are fashioned so that each page can be removed from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Coloring Books History

The earliest coloring book was created in America. The actual cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Teachers from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills very important down the road, specially those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that children who take part in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


Coloring books were the creation of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. And then, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another essential figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching little children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Images are easier to recall for youngsters, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. It is a known fact that connecting words with images is a magic formula of helping people acquire a new language. They are also utilized in particular classes as a technique of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recollecting the information easier.
