The History of Coloring Books
The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. This appearance was part of a process called the democratization of art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the significance of art and the value of teaching art to people, especially children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills vital later on, particularly relating to finding a suitable future job. As far as young children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. Next, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of this book was the inspiration that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching young children about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books pertaining to every topic. Kids find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a wonderful way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level.
