Coloring Books - What Are They?


Coloring books incorporate drawings produced to be filled and coloured utilizing various tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. There are coloring books for both adults and small children. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are ordinarily printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are produced so that each page can be removed from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Coloring Books History

The earliest coloring book was produced in America. A process called the democratization of art was the reason for the birth of coloring books. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The other two teachers who helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up supporting him in his future careers. Educators assert that children who engage in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


Coloring books were the development of the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the earliest coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of this book was the impetus that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.


How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens

Almost every classroom for children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate youngsters on a number of topics. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Youngsters find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's familiarity with certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
