Coloring Books History
Coloring books first originated in the US. A process called the democratization of art was responsible for the birth of coloring books. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was beneficial to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and advanced peoples’ perception of tangible things. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are very likely to prove very useful in his future as an adult. He may even end up finding his passion in life or a career because of developing an early artistic skill. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in little children who participate in artistic activities.
The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the earliest coloring book made by them in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined up with the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
Educational Uses of Coloring Books
Almost every classroom for small children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate kids on a number of topics. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and demanding compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new vocabulary. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. It is a known fact that connecting words with images is a fast way of helping people acquire a new language. Images are also a great way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subject areas like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recollecting the information easier.
