What are coloring books?


A coloring book is a book in which images are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill and colour by using things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and also other various kinds of paint and colours. There are coloring books for both adults and kids. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are normally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are fashioned so that each page can be removed from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Many coloring books have a particular theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Many coloring books these days include coloring pages of extremely popular cartoon characters, such as Lego Ninjago coloring pages or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. Another type of activity includes coloring books that come with stickers that can be attached on certain pages on these books.


Coloring Book- The History

The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. The primary reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the necessity of art and the value of teaching art to people, specifically children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. As far as young children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


Coloring books were the innovation of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. Next, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching small children about different things. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Kids find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a wonderful way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain topics like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recalling the information easier.
