Coloring Books - What Are They?


A coloring book is a book that features outlines, sketches plus drawings which readers can paint and color utilizing things like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. Coloring books and coloring pages are designed on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages can be bought individually or can be torn off from the coloring books that are designed to permit that. Some coloring books may contain a storyline that little children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.


Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first surfaced in the US. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Educators from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in kids who partake in artistic activities.


The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another essential figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Almost every classroom for kids and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate kids on a number of topics. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Images are easier to recall for youngsters, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's knowledge of certain topics like geometry, which require visual assistance to help understand the theories. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to focus on these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with various colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
