Coloring books first originated in the US. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. There after, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of this book was the inspiration that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
Almost every classroom for children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate youngsters on a number of topics. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents.
