What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book where images are drawn using lines and which readers can fill and color by utilizing things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other differing types of paint and colours. There are coloring books for both adults and little children. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are usually printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are made so that each page can be detached from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Some coloring books may include a story that small children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Coloring Books History
The first coloring book was made in America. The primary reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the importance of art and the value of teaching art to people, specially youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are very likely to prove very useful in his future as an adult. He might even end up finding his passion in life or a career due to developing an early artistic skill. The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the original coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined up with the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching young children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's knowledge of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Major publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
