The History of Coloring Books
The 1st coloring book was made in America. The reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two educators who served this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up aiding him in his future careers. Educators assert that kids who take part in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. And then, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.
