The Definition of Coloring Books along with their Uses


A coloring book is a book in which images are drawn using lines and which readers can fill and colour by making use of things like colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other several types of paint and colors. Coloring Books History

The earliest coloring book was made in America. A process called the democratization of art was the reason for the birth of coloring books. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who aided this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the significance of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up assisting him in his future careers. Educators assert that children who engage in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. And then, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Almost every classroom for little children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate little children on a number of topics. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Images are easier to recall for children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through pictures is a marvellous way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subjects like geometry and astronomy. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by large publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with various colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
