What are coloring books?


Although most coloring books are readily available children, there are numerous that are designed for adults. Coloring books and coloring pages are fashioned on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages can be purchased separately or can be torn off from the coloring books that are made to enable that. Many coloring books have a special theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Other activities available in coloring books and coloring pages are: puzzles, connecting the dots, and mazes and number games. There are also types of coloring books where little children can use stickers to stick on the pages and tell their own stories with them.


The History of Coloring Books

Coloring books first emerged in the US. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two teachers who really helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was beneficial to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and enhanced peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up supporting him in his future careers. Educators assert that youngsters who participate in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


Coloring books were the creation of the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the 1st coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the inspiration that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching small children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and tough as opposed to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new terminology. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's knowledge of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recollecting the information easier.
