What are coloring books?
Coloring books incorporate drawings created to be filled and coloured using different tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. Coloring Book- The History
The first coloring book was produced in America. A process called the democratization of art was the reason for the birth of coloring books. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills important down the road, specially those relating to finding a suitable future job. As far as youngsters were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the very first coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. Following that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching little children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Kids find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subjects like geometry and astronomy. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by major publishers who aimed to focus on these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with diverse colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
