Coloring Book- The History
The very first coloring book was manufactured in America. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the importance of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of value art provided. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are very likely to prove incredibly useful in his future as an adult. He may even end up finding his passion in life or a career resulting from developing an early artistic skill. As far as little children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
Coloring books were the creation of the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the original coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the push that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
Educational Uses of Coloring Books
Almost every classroom for young children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate little children on a number of topics. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Little children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Learning words through pictures is a wonderful way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. They are also utilized in selected classes as a means of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
