The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The other two teachers who helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are certainly likely to prove very useful in his future as an adult. He might even end up finding his passion in life or a career because of developing an early artistic skill. The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the very first coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. Next, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching young children about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books pertaining to every topic. Young children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words.
