The meaning of Coloring Books and Their Uses


A coloring book is a book in which drawings are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill and color by using things like colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other various types of paint and colours. Coloring books and coloring pages are produced on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages can be purchased individually or can be torn off from the coloring books that are made to allow that. Many coloring books have a particular theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that young children are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. These coloring books are utilized by huge companies as advertising materials and ways of popularizing new cartoons or films. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. There are also types of coloring books where children can use stickers to stick on the pages and tell their own stories with them.


Coloring Book- The History

The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. The cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the significance of art and the value of teaching art to people, specifically children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in little children who take part in artistic activities.


The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. And then, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another fundamental figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

Almost every classroom for children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate young children on a number of topics. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Images are easier to recall for children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subjects like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
