What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book where pictures are drawn using lines and which readers can fill up and colour by using such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other different kinds of paint and colors. While most coloring books are meant for kids, there are numerous that are aimed towards adults. Coloring books and coloring pages are fashioned on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are sold separately or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are designed to allow that. Some coloring books may feature a storyline that young children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. These coloring books are utilized by huge companies as advertising materials and ways of popularizing new cartoons or films. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. Another type of activity includes coloring books that come with stickers that can be attached on certain pages on these books.
Coloring Book- The History
Coloring books first originated in the US. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two educators who really helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Educators assert that little children who get involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. After that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
Educational Uses of Coloring Books
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's understanding of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
