Coloring Books - What Are They?


A coloring book is a book which includes lines, sketches as well as drawings which readers can paint and color using things like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. There are coloring books for both adults and little children. The History of Coloring Books

Coloring books first appeared in the US. The reason behind the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up supporting him in his future careers. Educators assert that youngsters who are involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the first coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and difficult when compared with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new words. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through pictures is a wonderful way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subject areas like geometry and astronomy. Major publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
