Coloring Books - What Are They?

Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first surfaced in the US. The main reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills important down the road, particularly relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that small children who participate in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another fundamental figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.


How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching youngsters a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Youngsters find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words.
