The Definition of Coloring Books in addition to their Uses

Coloring Book- The History

The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. This appearance was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Teachers from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills significant later in life, specifically those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in children who partake in artistic activities.


The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the 1st coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined up with the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Almost every classroom for little children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate children on a number of topics. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books pertaining to every topic. Images are easier to recall for youngsters, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subject areas like geometry and astronomy.
