Coloring Books - What Are They?
A coloring book is a book where pictures are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill up and colour by utilizing things like colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other various sorts of paint and colours. There are coloring books for both adults and children. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are typically printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are produced so that each page can be detached from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Some coloring books may contain a storyline that youngsters could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Coloring Book- The History
The earliest coloring book was created in America. This introduction was part of a process called the democratization of art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two educators who really helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ knowledge of tangible things. Educators assert that kids who are involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
Coloring books were the creation of the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the initial coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another essential figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching young children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Images are easier to recall for little children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through pictures is a marvellous way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. They are also utilized in specific classes as a method of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to focus on these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with various colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
