Coloring Books - What Are They?


A coloring book is a book containing outlines, images as well as drawings which readers can paint and color using items like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. Kids are the ones who predominantly use coloring books, but of course, even adults have coloring books. Coloring books and coloring pages are produced on cardboard sheets or papers. Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first originated in the US. This emergence was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and enhanced peoples’ knowledge of tangible things. Art education would prove to be valuable in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up assisting him in his future careers. Educators assert that young children who get involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


Coloring books were the invention of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. Next, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another fundamental figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching little children about different things. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and difficult when compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new words. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through pictures is an excellent way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. They are also utilized in certain classes as a technique of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by large publishers who aimed to focus on these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with diverse colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
