What are coloring books?


A coloring book is a book which has lines, sketches and also drawings which readers can paint and color using things like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. Little children are the ones who predominantly use coloring books, however, even adults have coloring books. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are usually printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are designed so that each page can be detached from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Many coloring books have a distinct theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. There are also types of coloring books where kids can use stickers to stick on the pages and tell their own stories with them.


Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first appeared in the US. The reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who assisted this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the significance of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving capabilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are incredibly likely to prove particularly useful in his future as an adult. He might even end up finding his passion in life or a career owing to developing an early artistic skill. As far as youngsters were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching young children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through pictures is a fantastic way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. They are also utilized in particular classes as a means of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recollecting the information easier.
