What are coloring books?


A coloring book is a book containing lines, sketches and also drawings which readers can paint and color implementing things like colouring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. Small children are the ones who mainly use coloring books, nevertheless, even adults have coloring books. Coloring Book- The History

The very first coloring book was produced in America. A process called the democratization of art was the reason for the birth of coloring books. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, particularly children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. As far as small children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the 1st coloring book made by them in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching youngsters a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books concerning every topic. Images are easier to recall for children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through pictures is a wonderful way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also.
