What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book where images are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill and colour by using such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other several types of paint and colours. Coloring books first appeared in the US. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills crucial later in life, particularly relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in youngsters who take part in artistic activities.
Coloring books were the innovation of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Almost every classroom for kids and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate kids on a number of topics. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Young children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words.
