Coloring Books - What Are They?


Youngsters are the ones who generally use coloring books, however, even adults have coloring books. Coloring books and coloring pages are produced on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are available separately or can be torn off from the coloring books that are made to permit that. Many coloring books have a specific theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that youngsters are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.


The History of Coloring Books

The earliest coloring book was produced in America. The real reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was beneficial to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ understanding of tangible things. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are extremely likely to prove extremely useful in his future as an adult. He may even end up finding his passion in life or a career resulting from developing an early artistic skill. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in children who partake in artistic activities.


The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the 1st coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another fundamental figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the impetus that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching children about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books pertaining to every topic. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and complicated in contrast to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new expressions. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. They are also utilized in selected classes as a method of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to focus on these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with numerous colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
