The History of Coloring Books
The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. The reason behind the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ understanding of tangible things. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills significant down the road, specially those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that small children who engage in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
