Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.
The History of Coloring Books
Coloring books first come about in the US. This emergence was part of a process called the democratization of art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills necessary down the road, specifically those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that children who are involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the push that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
The Uses of Coloring Books in Education
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching kids a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and complicated when compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new expressions. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a faster way of helping people acquire a new language. They are also utilized in particular classes as a means of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
