What are coloring books?
Coloring books consist of drawings designed to be filled and coloured using different tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are generally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are made so that each page can be detached from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would ruin the story. Coloring Books History
Coloring books first emerged in the US. A process called the democratization of art was responsible for the birth of coloring books. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was beneficial to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills essential later in life, in particular those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in kids who take part in artistic activities.
Coloring books were the development of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. After that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another essential figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of this book was the inspiration that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
Educational Uses of Coloring Books
Almost every classroom for youngsters and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate children on a number of topics. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and difficult when compared with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new expressions. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a fantastic way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also.
