Coloring Books - What Are They?


A coloring book is a book containing lines, images as well as drawings which readers can paint and colour using things like colouring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are typically printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are produced so that each page can be removed from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would ruin the story. Coloring Book- The History

The very first coloring book was manufactured in America. This beginning was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, particularly kids. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in kids who take part in artistic activities.


The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the first coloring book made by them in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching kids a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books touching on every topic. Images are easier to recall for young children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a fantastic way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain topics like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and remembering the information easier.
