What are coloring books?


A coloring book is a book in which graphics are drawn using lines and which readers can fill and colour through the use of such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other various kinds of paint and colours. Small children are the ones who mostly use coloring books, however, even adults have coloring books. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are normally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are made so that each page can be detached from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Some coloring books may incorporate a storyline that youngsters could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Many coloring books these days include coloring pages of extremely popular cartoon characters, such as Lego Ninjago coloring pages or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages. Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first emerged in the US. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the significance of art and the value of teaching art to people, particularly kids. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills significant down the road, specially those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that youngsters who are involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching small children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books pertaining to every topic. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and challenging when compared with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new terminology. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. It is a known fact that connecting words with images is a magic formula of helping people acquire a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's familiarity with certain topics like geometry, which require visual assistance to help understand the theories. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to focus on these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with numerous colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
