What are coloring books?
Coloring books incorporate sketches produced to be filled and colored implementing a variety of tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. While most coloring books are intended for children, you will find that are aimed at adults. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are ordinarily printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are made so that each page can be removed from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. In the case where they pages of the coloring book have a sequence or tell a story, they can't be torn out or used as stand-alone pages because that would spoil the story. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.
The History of Coloring Books
The very first coloring book was created in America. The reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills very important later in life, specifically those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that little children who take part in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another essential figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
