The meaning of Coloring Books and also their Uses


A coloring book is a book where pictures are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill up and colour by utilizing things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other various types of paint and colours. Coloring books and coloring pages are produced on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages can be bought separately or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are made to permit that. Many coloring books have a specific theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first appeared in the US. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two teachers who helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Teachers from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills fundamental later on, especially those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in little children who partake in artistic activities.


The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. Afterwards, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the push that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

Almost every classroom for children and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate kids on a number of topics. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books touching on every topic. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through pictures is a superb way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also an excellent way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subjects like geometry and astronomy. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recalling the information easier.
