What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book where images are drawn using lines and which readers can fill up and colour by making use of such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other several types of paint and colors. Coloring Books History
Coloring books first surfaced in the US. A process called the democratization of art was the reason for the birth of coloring books. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, specifically children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills essential later on, particularly relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that small children who are involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. Following that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the push that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.
Educational Uses of Coloring Books
These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching kids about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books concerning every topic. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and demanding compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new words. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through pictures is an excellent way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. They are also utilized in specific classes as a method of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level.
