What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book in which pictures are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill and colour by making use of things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other numerous kinds of paint and colours. There are coloring books for both adults and little children. Coloring books and coloring pages are fashioned on cardboard sheets or papers. Coloring Books History
The 1st coloring book was produced in America. This appearance was part of a process known as the democratization of art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, specifically children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. As far as kids were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. After that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books concerning every topic. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and demanding in comparison with coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new words. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Learning words through pictures is a fantastic way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. As well as using images to expand people's comprehension of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recollecting the information easier.
