Coloring Books - What Are They?


A coloring book is a book where images are drawn using lines and which readers can fill and colour by making use of things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and also other different types of paint and colors. While most coloring books are intended for kids, there are numerous that are aimed at adults. Coloring books and coloring pages are fashioned on cardboard sheets or papers. Coloring Book- The History

The 1st coloring book was manufactured in America. A process called the democratization of art was responsible for the birth of coloring books. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. The other two educators who served this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ perception of tangible things. As far as young children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


Coloring books were the creation of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens

Almost every classroom for youngsters and preschoolers has a coloring book available somewhere, as these books are used to educate kids on a number of topics. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books touching on every topic. Images are easier to recall for youngsters, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through pictures is a fantastic way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Not to mention using images to expand people's comprehension of certain topics like geometry, which require visual assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level.
