What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book that features lines, images and also drawings which readers can paint and colour by using things like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. Little children are the ones who predominantly use coloring books, however, even adults have coloring books. Coloring books and coloring pages are fashioned on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are available individually or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are made to allow that. Some coloring books may incorporate a storyline that small children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Other activities available in coloring books and coloring pages are: puzzles, connecting the dots, and mazes and number games. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.
The History of Coloring Books
The first coloring book was produced in America. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The other two teachers who helped this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Instructors from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. Art education would prove to be beneficial in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up assisting him in his future careers. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in children who participate in artistic activities.
The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the earliest coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
