The 1st coloring book was created in America. A process called the democratization of art was responsible for the birth of coloring books. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was beneficial to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are very likely to prove extremely useful in his future as an adult. He might even end up finding his passion in life or a career resulting from developing an early artistic skill. Coloring books were the innovation of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching small children about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books touching on every topic. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and complicated compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new terminology. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a fast way of helping people acquire a new language. As well as using images to expand people's knowledge of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Significant publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
