What are coloring books?
A coloring book is a book that has outlines, images plus drawings which readers can paint and color making use of such things as coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. While most coloring books are intended for kids, there are several that are directed at adults. The History of Coloring Books
The very first coloring book was made in America. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. The man behind this process was an artist from England called Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, specially youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving abilities and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills very important later on, in particular those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that young children who engage in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.
Coloring books were the creation of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. There after, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what began the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.
Educational Uses of Coloring Books
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching small children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a marvellous way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. Images are also a great way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subjects like geometry and astronomy. Significant publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
