Coloring Books - What Are They?


There are coloring books for both adults and little children. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are usually printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are made so that each page can be detached from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Many coloring books have a unique theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. The History of Coloring Books

Coloring books first appeared in the US. This appearance was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The person who influenced this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the necessity of art and the value of teaching art to people, specially youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of value art provided. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are extremely likely to prove incredibly useful in his future as an adult. He might even end up finding his passion in life or a career because of developing an early artistic skill. As far as children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. It was then that the McLoughlins joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching kids about different things. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and challenging when compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new terminology. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a magic formula of helping people acquire a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's knowledge of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by large publishers who aimed to focus on these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with different colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
