The Definition of Coloring Books and also their Uses

A coloring book is a book in which graphics are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill up and color by utilizing things like colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other differing kinds of paint and colours. There are coloring books for both adults and kids. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are ordinarily printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are created so that each page can be removed from the book once it is completed and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Many coloring books have a distinct theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. Naturally, these coloring books are used by big companies as a way of advertising these new cartoons or their other products. Other activities available in coloring books and coloring pages are: puzzles, connecting the dots, and mazes and number games. Another type of activity includes coloring books that come with stickers that can be attached on certain pages on these books.

Coloring Books History

Coloring books first emerged in the US. This beginning was part of a process known as the democratization of art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two educators who served this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was helpful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ knowledge of tangible things. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills crucial later in life, especially those relating to finding a suitable future job. As far as little children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.

The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another essential figure in the history of coloring books. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
